TOROUTE

ETA & Journey-Time Calculator

Turn a route's distance and your average speed into a journey time — add planned stops and a departure time to see exactly when you'll arrive.

Use the same unit for distance and speed.

Distance, speed, and the clock

Estimated time of arrival is one of the oldest pieces of navigation arithmetic: divide the distance still to cover by the speed you can keep up, and you have the moving time. The honest part is choosing the average speed — not the number on the speedometer at full flow, but the one that folds in every slowdown along the way.

Planned stops sit on top of that moving time, and a departure time turns the whole thing into an arrival you can actually plan around, including journeys that run past midnight. Pair it with the great-circle distance tool for the crow-flies leg, or use a real road distance for the most realistic estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is estimated time of arrival calculated?

Moving time is distance divided by average speed: a 300-unit route at 60 units per hour takes five hours. The tool then adds any planned stop time and, if you give a departure time, adds the total to it to produce an arrival clock time, rolling over past midnight where needed.

What units should I use?

Any, as long as distance and speed share one. Use kilometres with km/h, or miles with mph. The result is a duration in hours and minutes, so the distance unit itself never appears in the answer — it just has to match the speed.

Should I use my top speed or an average?

Use a realistic average for the whole route, not a cruising or top speed. Junctions, traffic, gradients, and towns all pull the average down. A good habit is to look at how long a similar route took before and back out the average speed it implies.

Why add planned stops separately?

Average speed captures moving conditions, but a meal break, a fuel stop, or a rest are time off the road that a speed figure doesn't include. Entering them as stop minutes keeps the moving-time estimate honest while still giving a realistic door-to-door total.

Does it handle arrivals after midnight?

Yes. If the journey pushes the arrival past midnight, the clock time wraps around and the result notes how many days later you arrive, so an overnight drive shows the correct next-day time.
